OCCC Spring Meeting May 9, 2014 Held at Western Oregon University Monmouth, Oregon Meeting Agenda: 1. Welcome: John Blackwood and Dave Olson. 2. Introductions of all members.  3. News and Information from Colleges: 4. Umpqua CC: John Blackwood. Push for student with good GPA to receive 2 years tuition. Rogue Foundation paying for tuition right now. Researching whether or not State will put up funds in the future. 5. LBCC: Dodi Coreson. Enrollment is down 12% overall, but CS classes are still full. May be looking for a full time faculty person in the near future. Have moved to mandatory advising and a required first-term experience course. Using AdvisorTrac to track advising sessions. 6. WOU: Enrollment increasing. Just finished a revision of the IT degree, about to look at the CS minor and revise that. ASOT for transfer from CTE degree at community colleges.  7. PCC-Rock Creek: Walter Morales… enrollment steady. Opened “geek center” where students can get together and work on equipment and projects. 8. OIT; Wilsonville: At Wilsonville campus. Enrollment increased form 250 – 770. Should be at 1,000 in a few years.  9. Univ of Oregon: Enrollment seems to be up. Incoming students increasing in the Math/CS combo major. 10. Portland State: Now requiring students to apply for admission by July 1st. for upper division CS program. Will use a proficiency exam to determine competency at Data Structures level, with no reference materials. 11. Columbia Gorge CC: new program, starting this summer at the Hood River campus. 12. OIT: Jay Bockelman [this update needs to be added to our minutes.] 13. Chemeketa: Andrew; In middle of a program review. Overall numbers down, but not in CS classes. Administration asking for 10% cut across the board. New situation with required advising, and asked to advise students who are not majors. Using Starfish software to track advising sessions. Mandatory advising in the first 30 hours. Every term, have a hold until they receive advising… for first 30 hours.  14. Oregon State: Jennifer Parham-Mocello and Calvin Hughes Enrollment is up, 330 students in CS161. No longer doing EECS prefix instead of CS… bad idea….back to using just the CS designator. Should have about 150 in online CS 161 15. next term. Pro school, not many applying next time… GPA 2.7 on selected courses for Pro-school. Change in Dept Head and school head. With new Dean coming on, can expect changes in GPA for Pro schools to be changed, and different for each school. Going to First Year Experience model. Goal to increase retention of first-year students. One advisor with college of Engineering. meet 5 times in the first year. Everyone has to live on campus first year. CS 160 will be three credits. Four credit CS160 classes still transfer. Want to change CS 275 class, Databases. CS161 and 162 are C++. No more embedded hardware.  16. OSU at Bend, should be breaking ground for a building in summer.Mount Hood: David Todd - Overall enrollment down 8%, but CS not down. Running 7 programs in CIS…all doing well. Except for Health Informatics. Want to know if they missed the boat or what is happening with Health Informatics at other campuses. Experiencing some difficulty with listing of classes in schedule. 17. Rogue: Juliet Long: Seeing a great interest in students who want to transfer to OIT. Also increase in CS transfer classes. They are offering both C++ and Java tracks, depending on where they want to transfer. 18. Lane: Enrollment down about 15% over last year. Their department has seen no decline. New developments: have been offering 161 and 162 in Java… will only offer in C++ next fall. Thinking about trying Python. Expanding offerings in mobile courses… will have both Android and OIS course next year. GROUP TOPICS A. Course Numbering Process: Mitch Fry 1. Put number into WIKI, for others to look at and think about, vote at next meeting 2. Build a page about the course. Debra or Mitch can drop in the template. 3. Other members should submit comments under Notes sections. Mitch will be putting in a new one before fall.  4. CS160 name change and change of focus to match the new AP test that will come out next spring B. OSU: course numbering CS 290 a. Web development course before database course. b. Prototyping (as interns), better done in WebDev tools. c. Would move CS275 out of pre-pro school courses. d. Discussion around how the Community Colleges would handle this change – how existing courses would be altered or used to articulate to this course. e. Will still articulate CS 275 to meet requirement for a number of years AND will still articulate CS 275 to the new designation for 300 number that they will give to 275 . f. CS290 is an open number. g. Motion was made to accept the proposal C. ASOT for CS a. Working group set up in December, started in January. b. CCWD got wind of proposal, asked for them to come to JBAC in April to present proposal. c. Legislature passed a bill concerning needing more AAOT’s in STEM areas, which is why they are so interested. d. Group split In half to present at the two meetings. e. Juliet presented in Bend to CIA (Counsel of Instructional Administrators), and got full recommendation. f. Sherry, Mitch and Dave Olson presented at Provost Council in Portland . g. Provost council will write a letter to accept. h. What is the next step? Nobody seems to know… How do we get final approval? i. The OCCC will be the official body to maintain integrity of the degree. j. Mitch will post the draft documents on the WIKI when it is available. D. Western Oregon AB degree in IS and CS a. Umpqua – adjusted the HI degree to have more technology skills. b. LBCC – Samaritan Health is the employer, and they aren’t interested. c. Lane – has been successful. Health classes are online. d. CCHIC – meets twice a year. They are in process of revising the degree. e. Question: should they meet in conjunction with us to have a discussion? f. Need to get employers on board before we push the degree. E. Question: Should we revise what we call ourselves? a. Call ourselves OC3? b. This item was discussed but no name change was adopted. We will discuss this again at a later meeting. BUSINESS A. Next meeting – October 17, 2014 B. Location: Lane Community College C. Next Chair will be selected at that meeting. D. The Spring 2015 meeting will be held at PCC - Rock Creek, on May 8, 2015. E. This date will be confirmed at our next meeting. F. Group Picture! LUNCH AFTERNOON SESSION B. Dave Olson demonstrated the Western Oregon classroom software for videoconferencing with remote classrooms. They are using Blackboard’s Collaborate and another video conferencing software. C. David Swenson Award: Jay Bockelman and Sherrie Yang of OIT Were recognized for their work for the OCCC and the state of Oregon. D. ASOT – take a detailed look at the proposed degree. E. CIS – WOU AB degree discussed.
